Summary

This debut paperback original romance follows a Latina teen pop star whose image takes a dive after a messy public breakup, until she’s set up with a swoon-worthy fake boyfriend。

Fake boyfriend。 Real heartbreak?

Natalie is living her dream: topping the charts and setting records as a Brazilian pop star…until she’s dumped spectacularly on live television。 Not only is it humiliating—it could end her career。

Her PR team’s desperate plan? A gorgeous yet oh-so-fake boyfriend。 Nati reluctantly agrees, but William is not what she expected。 She was hoping for a fierce bad boy—not a soft-hearted British indie film star。 While she fights her way back to the top with a sweet and surprisingly swoon-worthy boy on her arm, she starts to fall for William—and realizes that maybe she’s the biggest fake of them all。 Can she reclaim her voice and her heart?

A very cute read, LIKE A LOVE SONG deals with Latina pop star, Nati, who is dealing with the fallout of her public break-up and decides to fake-date indie film actor William in order to bring her image back up to par。 Along the way, the fake dating turns into real feelings and the two must decide whether to continue their relationship in the spotlight。 This story deals with mild xenophobia, anxiety, and the miscommunication trope。

Elizabeth

Cute book。 MC struggling with being her true self。 Loved the fake romance turned to friendship and then went deeper made the relationship feel more real which was refreshing。

Super cute YA romance! Lots of diversity and fun characters。 The story just needed a little more。。。。razzle dazzle for me。 But all in all I enjoyed myself。

This was so cute! I would love to see this as a movie - it would seriously make the best Netflix romcom (especially for the holidays based on the ending)! 💜

This is a cute YA fake-dating romance。 When pop star Natalie goes through a very public and embarrassing break-up, her team comes up with an idea to rebuild her image: a new (fake) boyfriend。 Scrawny, awkward William isn’t what she had in mind, but she signs the contact and braces herself。 Of course, she ends up liking him a lot more than she’d ever planned to。The romance is sweet, with a good amount of build up and drama that actually seems believable。 (I hate when all of the problems in a roma This is a cute YA fake-dating romance。 When pop star Natalie goes through a very public and embarrassing break-up, her team comes up with an idea to rebuild her image: a new (fake) boyfriend。 Scrawny, awkward William isn’t what she had in mind, but she signs the contact and braces herself。 Of course, she ends up liking him a lot more than she’d ever planned to。The romance is sweet, with a good amount of build up and drama that actually seems believable。 (I hate when all of the problems in a romance could be solved by the characters just talking to each other - this one, for the most part, didn’t have that problem but had actual fair relationship issues instead。) I also appreciated the arc about Natalie reconsidering who she wants to be and the importance of her Brazilian family and background。 Overall, I enjoyed the story, and I think teens will, too。 。。。more

Natalie’s dreams of becoming a famous singer have come true。 Natalie is a chart-topper, award-winning, best-selling artist just like she always wanted。 Natalie’s dream bubble pops when her perfect boyfriend dumps her backstage at an award show, and their break-up becomes a viral meme。 Natalie is desperate to save her career, even if that means paying William, an up-and-coming actor, to be her fake boyfriend。 The plan was for their “romance” to stay strictly professional, but as the two spend tim Natalie’s dreams of becoming a famous singer have come true。 Natalie is a chart-topper, award-winning, best-selling artist just like she always wanted。 Natalie’s dream bubble pops when her perfect boyfriend dumps her backstage at an award show, and their break-up becomes a viral meme。 Natalie is desperate to save her career, even if that means paying William, an up-and-coming actor, to be her fake boyfriend。 The plan was for their “romance” to stay strictly professional, but as the two spend time together, their fake feelings start to feel real。 I spent some time trying to put into words my reaction to Like a Love Song, and finally, the only way I can describe this book is adorable。Martins took the familiar fake dating troupe and dove deeper with her characters to make the book more than I expected。 Natalie is a superstar singer, she has money and fame, but she also has insecurity and anxiety issues。 Martins made her main character more than the average teen girl romantic lead, which enriched the novel。 Also, with Henry, the author crafted a charming love interest for Natalie。 Henry is sweet and quirky, and I enjoyed the moments we got to see them together。 I also enjoyed the way Martins represented different groups in this book。 Natalie is from Brazil, and several of the characters are LGBTQ。 The other seamlessly included this representation which making it feel forced。 The characters and their relationships make the book worth reading。However, I did have an issue with the romance。 Natalie and Henry follow the expected path found in fake dating books。 Their arranged relationship begins to develop into a real relationship; this evolution is expected in a fake date book, but in Like a Love Song, the evolution felt rushed。 We are told the characters spend time together, but we don’t truly see their feelings grow。 I would have been more invested in their relationship if there had been more interactions between Natalie and Henry。Like a Love Song is a charming YA romance with strong characters that fans of the genre will enjoy。Originally posted at https://bickeringbooks。wordpress。com/。。。 。。。more

Essentially, this story is tons of fun。 It's a whirlwind that takes readers on a journey of lived experiences, balancing swoon-worthy romance with confrontations with xenophobia, not feeling Brazilian enough, and coming to accept your identity。 。。。more

I loved Nati's journey of self-discovery and the discussions around the struggle she faces as a diasporic Brazilian—I'm not Brazilian, but as a second-gen immigrant, I felt that a lot of Nati's fears and insecurities resonated deeply with me。 That was definitely my favorite part of the book。Unfortunately, I feel lukewarm about the romance itself。 Certain details took me out of the romance because they made me question how realistic it was。 For one, both Nati and William have such strong reasons I loved Nati's journey of self-discovery and the discussions around the struggle she faces as a diasporic Brazilian—I'm not Brazilian, but as a second-gen immigrant, I felt that a lot of Nati's fears and insecurities resonated deeply with me。 That was definitely my favorite part of the book。Unfortunately, I feel lukewarm about the romance itself。 Certain details took me out of the romance because they made me question how realistic it was。 For one, both Nati and William have such strong reasons for going along with the fake relationship that it surprised me that they were constantly fighting with each other in public。 I get that arguments = romantic drama, but it made me feel like they weren't committed to the fake relationship at all。I also had a hard time buying William's complaints about dealing with Nati's fame and scrutiny, since he's also a celebrity/entertainer。 Sure, I guess indie actors get less scrutiny than huge Hollywood stars, but he still should be used to the idea of being under a microscope more than a normal person, right? His attitude would've made much more sense to me if he wasn't an actor himself, indie or not。 Not to mention it was weird that he turned down high-paying roles in favor of indie movies even though his family is in debt? Like。。。people do know actors take roles they don't like unless they're super famous and rich already because they need to pay rent, right? 。。。more

Not really a fan of the cover, but it's been a long time since I read fake-dating trope romance and I saw the early good reviews and I just knew I had to anticipate for this book。But。。。 this was just not that good。 I just found a lot of things awkward and unnatural。 First, the MC's were suppossedly 17, but I think it would have suited more if they're in their mid to late 20's。 The heroine's inner voice felt mature, but I found her annoying and judgmental at times, like the part where she called Not really a fan of the cover, but it's been a long time since I read fake-dating trope romance and I saw the early good reviews and I just knew I had to anticipate for this book。But。。。 this was just not that good。 I just found a lot of things awkward and unnatural。 First, the MC's were suppossedly 17, but I think it would have suited more if they're in their mid to late 20's。 The heroine's inner voice felt mature, but I found her annoying and judgmental at times, like the part where she called the hero "not hot, not fierce, but soft" and when she got called out for it, she just shrugged it off? This was after someone called the hero "weak"。 I didn't even read a part when she felt bad about it。 The hero was okay。 I actually wanted his POV because I just cared about him, but he just ended up like a manic pixie dream boy。 Side characters acted like caricatures。 We got told of their struggles, but there's just no showing。 They just talked about it for the most part。The story was all over the place, as if it doesn't know what it's going to be, how it's going to be written, and how many tropes are going to be incorporated。 It's so short that I don't think there was ever a plot? The timeline, too, is also confusing。 It's not fast-paced。 It's rushed and inconsistent。 Like we jumped from one scene to another and it would state that a whole week had passed, but it didn't seem like it? The contract stated 3 months and the hero is so worried of neglecting his duties, but just upped and left, and I don't even care how many weeks or months had passed before they went to Portugal。 The book even tried to delve into deep themes, but it felt forced, and the dialogues seemed something that was straight up from a Twitter thread or a Tumblr post。 The heroine had no internal struggles, just an epiphany that she needed to be better and to accept herself for who she is。 I just wanted to actually read her mind and get to know her, you know? But all I got are dialogues that didn't make sense for the most part。 She only interacted with a family member from Brazil once, and that's not even the part when she had that epiphany。 Her relationship with fame and being a celebrity were actually handled just fine, but with her Brazilian roots (the real main conflict, thank God not the romance) — it just didn't deliver。 I wanted more。 I wanted more cultural representation and actual family interactions, but we got more than 70% of the heroine struggling how she felt for the hero。 Other things that were okay was her relationship with her two friends。 Now that was consistent。 。。。more

Oh what would I do without insta-love books… This book requires little to no real thought while reading, and is just a fun ride to go on with two surprisingly well-developed characters。 I loved all the diversity, and how the author speaks about the social injustice against Latina women, and queer men。 The subjects were introduced as normal, and the conversations were kept very realistic。 Now that I think about it, this book was just the plot of Notting Hill but with diversity。 (Not complaining t Oh what would I do without insta-love books… This book requires little to no real thought while reading, and is just a fun ride to go on with two surprisingly well-developed characters。 I loved all the diversity, and how the author speaks about the social injustice against Latina women, and queer men。 The subjects were introduced as normal, and the conversations were kept very realistic。 Now that I think about it, this book was just the plot of Notting Hill but with diversity。 (Not complaining though because I’m a sucker for romcoms as it is)。Also, can we talk about William?? This book was a little different from the other famous pop star stories I've encountered in YA reads。 For one thing, Nati is a Portuguese pop star fighting prejudices and stereotypes internally and externally。 William's technically an up-and-coming star trying not to be because what comes with the territory is exactly what he doesn't want for himself。 The pair together in the novel makes for a very remixed What-A-Girl-Wants love story。 This book was a little different from the other famous pop star stories I've encountered in YA reads。 For one thing, Nati is a Portuguese pop star fighting prejudices and stereotypes internally and externally。 William's technically an up-and-coming star trying not to be because what comes with the territory is exactly what he doesn't want for himself。 The pair together in the novel makes for a very remixed What-A-Girl-Wants love story。 。。。more

I felt her emotions and her feelings felt valid to me。Natalie’s two friends, Padma and Brenda were so nice! I liked that we could SEE their love for one another and how deep their friendship was! I always love seeing a bff girl gang in books <3The fake dating trope is one of my favourites! And it was done so well in this one! Their romance was so cute! Starting from strangers who didn’t think highly about each other, to friends slowly starting to share everything, to realising their feeling for each other。 It was 🥺♥️♥️ My heart was so full!!Oh! And I forgot to mention, there’s only one bed trope as well 😌We also get Brazilian- American, Pakistani- American rep + Jewish rep so yay for diversity!! 🥰There were also themes of self acceptance and cultural acceptance that I LOVED! I understood Natalie’s struggles with feeling like an outsider with her Brazilian family。 We got little bits of Portuguese mixed in which made the reading experience even more enjoyable!I love when authors include words from their own mother tongues or a foreign language! I especially love them when it’s in books by Latinx authors! All these language mixes sound so fun!Since the book was about celebrities, we also got more behind the scenes on what it’s like to be in the shoes of someone famous, what all they have to deal with and the toll social media and scandals take on them。 I really liked reading more of that!I definitely recommend Like a love song! Such a cute AND quick read while also having some serious bits。 。。。more

(I know I shouldn't laugh, but it was really funny you guyss。。 ) I think the simple and carefree writing style helped the story a lot and made me love it even more。 William was the oh so always the gentleman and their banter were really good。 They head butted all the time and the character development for both of them were done really well! The author did a fantastic job in making the MC embrace her tradition and be true to herself。 I really really liked that ending too。 The fact that it wasn't all love declarations and cheesy dialogues made it real。 Although there were times I felt that certain scenes were unnecessary or done really short。 I would have liked to see more of William too。 。Overall, this was a really good coming of age, self growth, get your confidence back and embrace your heritage story with some PR nightmares, fake dating, real feelings, heart to heart conversations, some banter and some inspiration!
